INSIDER NOTES: why your first 10 seconds matter more than your whole song
INSIDER NOTES: why your first 10 seconds matter more than your whole song
By Jules Ryder
If you are sending your track to labels or curators, here is the tough truth: most of us don't listen past the first 10 seconds - unless you give us a reason to. Think of your songs opening as a movie trailer, is there a hook? An emotion or vibe? A reason to not skip? Don't get me wrong we want to love your music. But when we're sifting through 300+ submissions a week, the first few moments of your track need to scream "I know what I'm doing, Listen to me." That doesn't mean every song needs a banger intro, but it does mean you need to be intentional. Start with a sonic identity, give me something that tells me who you are as an artist in the first 10 seconds. Whether it is a unique vocal tone, a gritty guitar riff or a left field sample - make it undeniably you. Your opening seconds are your elevator pitch. Make them count.
About the writer: Jules Ryder is a sharp-eared A&R scout here at Unveiled Artists, known for sotting genre-bending talent before they hit the mainstream. She has worked behind the scenes with artists who have gone from bedroom studios to BBC Radio 1 playlists. Jules writes a monthly column for TrackDrop, giving emerging musicians real talk and inside tips on breaking through the noise. Her mantra: "Don't chase the trend, be the one they chase."

Interview with Nominated Artist Willow
Hosted by Maya Lopez

Maya: "Hey everyone, welcome back to Unveiled Magazine! I am social media manager Maya Lopez and today we are super excited to be chatting with our music artist of the month - the amazing Willow Dryden. Thanks so much for joining us! "
Willow: "Thank you for having me! I am so excited"
Maya: "First things first, congratulations on being named our nominated Artist of the Month! How does it feel?"
Willow: "Honestly, it is surreal. I have been working so hard on my music and to get recognised like this means a lot"
Maya: "for anyone who is just discovering you - how would you describe your sound in three words?"
Willow: "Emotional, raw and a little chaotic - in a good way!" (laughs)
Maya: "Love that. Growing up, did you always know that you wanted to make music?
Willow: "Yes and no, I have always loved it, but it felt like the dream was too big, you know? It wasn't until I started writing my own songs that I thought, 'Maybe I can actually do this."
Maya: "The industry can be tough - what is one of the biggest challenges you have faced so far?"
Willow: "Definitely trying to stay true to myself. There is a lot of pressure to fit a mold, but I have learned the more honest I am, the more people actually connect with my music."
Maya: "Was there ever a moment where you thought about giving up?"
Willow: "So many moments! (laughs) But every time, someone messages me about how a song helped them and that makes it all worth it!"
Maya: "If you could go back and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?"
Willow: "Don't wait for someone to tell you you're good enough. Just start - even if it is messy, even if you are scared."
